Sintra, Portugal

The famous Portuguese town, known for lush castles and estates is a perfect day trip from Lisbon.

There are many options for day trips from Lisbon, but Sintra is not to be missed. In the high season I can imagine its even more crawling with tourists but the beauty of the region is worth it. If you use public transportation its easy to take the commuter train to Sintra, it takes about an hour. *Tip: buy your tickets in advance in order to avoid the long lines to buy tickets in the morning. The train (in March at least) only left once an hour. I would arrive early as well in order to get a seat, especially in the summer I think it can get really crowded and you’re in for a long day of walking!

Pena Palace

Pena Palace is probably the most well-known of the Sintra castles. Its the only one I had time for and easily could have spent 2 days there. If you have time I do recommend spending 2 days in the region to see more. The castle was really lovely, I’d advise buying your ticket online in advance and be sure to also purchase the self-guided tour of the inside, its really magical! They did an excellent job of maintaining the castle and all the information plaques are written in Portuguese and English so its easy to follow along.

Dinner with a view

I had a delicious burger with caramelized onions and brie with fries and aioli at Sintra Terrace. And a delicious house wine to wash it down. The patio is covered and was very pleasant!

Sintra Town

Its easy to spend an afternoon in the winding, cobblestone town full of little shops and cafes.
